INTERVIEW: GHARLIERA

INTERVIEW: GHARLIERA

Introducing GHARLIERA. An absolutely incredible cyberpunk artist, who has been recently collaborating with the likes of Black Tiger Sex Machine, Kannibalen Records and HVDES. His futuristic dystopian uses themes of AI and cybernetics, and we can’t get enough of it.

Where are you from?

I'm from South Korea. Not Kim 's. ;)

3 things that inspire your art?

The big category is movie, music, and travel. My father is a professor of Movie at a university in Korea.

I have seen many movies under the influence of this. Not only blockbusters but also small indie films from Europe and Asia.

Music is also very helpful to me. I respect musicians as much as a good illustrator.

Travel is a good stretch to evoke my brain that is sometimes stationary.

I go to various resorts every year as well as to the nearest Asian countries around Korea.

I think it is important to draw many artworks but also where the artist is inspired, so I try to be stimulated in various fields.

What music do you listen to while creating your art?

I listen to various types of music. From Cleaning to British rock, jazz from around the world, and hip-hop from Korea recently.

(But I don't listen to K-pop very well.)

Recently, collecting vinyl records is my hobby,  so I have been collecting vinyl records from British rock artists such as The Beatles, David Bowie, and The Who,  to 80's Japanese city-pop artists such as Mariah Takeuchi, Anri, and Tatsuro Yamashita.

Among them, my favourite genre is jazz in Japan. Although it is not known to many people,

I go to Japan from Korea to watch live by groups with beautiful female vocals such as Blu-swing and Jill-decoy Association.

What makes you happy?

I think a lot when I work on one art work. So when my paintings of mine with these ideas and

my research are passed on to the caregivers and they're empathised, I'm very happy.

What doesn’t make you happy?

It's the other way around here. I am very disappointed when the message that

I have in the picture is not passed on to the public.

But I don't stop being disappointed, and I find the cause in it, and I'm focused on the better.

Dream project?

If I have my dream project, I want to make my own brand like Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Takashi Murakami.

So recently, I made a site that sells products using my art. (http://gharliera.com)

It's open, and I'm very happy to have more interest than I expected.

There are different styles of art and artists in the world, and to survive.

I think it is best for me to be a brand myself rather than to belong somewhere.

Favourite food when drunk?

As expected, I recommend Korean fried chicken as a Korean.

There are many brands of fried chicken in Korea and different styles.

There are hipsters who study them like wine sommeliers.

I'm one of them.

What does the world need more of?

I think we need to respect each other's values and beliefs. But this is the most difficult law.I feel this in many parts of the world as well as in ordinary life.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

That's a funny question. Maybe mind control is the best thing to use in real life rather than shooting a laser in the eye or flying in the sky.
