INTERVIEW: GEORGIA LOVE
Introducing Georgia Love - our latest photographer obsession. Hailing from Vancouver, Georgia is killing the game in fashion photography and creative direction, having work published in the likes of Forbes, Off The Rails, Volant and Mob Journal - to name a few. When we first discovered her instagram profile, we were immediately drawn to her unique way of capturing a certain feeling in each photo.
First camera?
My first DSLR camera was a Canon Rebel XSi from Costco that my mom purchased after seeing some photos I took on my horrible quality LG Keybo phone, I’m still so grateful that she saw potential in those images and immediately took me to get a camera to explore photography further.
A guilty pleasure?
Probably buying a box of donuts knowing full well I’m going to eat all of them on my way home.
Sun or moon?
Sun. I couldn’t do what I do without it!
Last song you listened to?
‘Cause I’m a Man by Tame Impala. That entire album is unreal and on repeat whenever I’m editing photos.
Who and what inspires you?
I’m often visually inspired by clothing, a location, films, music videos and tv shows. I think that tv shows and films are showing us what is coming down the pipeline in terms of what’s trending. I’m also inspired by when people tell me no, or that I can't. I've gotten to where I am because instead of letting those comments stop me, I saw them as challenges.
I find I get uninspired when I’m burnt out and not eating well. Something that I’ve learnt through experience is that I need to prioritise breaks and my diet so that I can continue to work as hard as I do.
Film or digital?
I shoot all my personal projects on film and all my professional work is shot digitally. I shoot on film for my personal work because I don’t allow myself to have the opportunity to put time into fussing over making it perfect. I can just allow it to be whatever it is in the moment. My professional work is shot digitally because I get to have total control over the images and it allows a more collaborative effort for the rest of my team. The model gets to see what they look like as we shoot so we can work together to achieve the best result, and my assist gets to see what I’m shooting and that allows me to teach while on the go.
Humans or animals?
Both. I think people are incredibly fascinating and it’s so much fun being able to create a safe space and to discuss ideas, hopes, dreams and feelings. The world can be such a cruel place and I do think we need our community. With COVID and social media it certainly makes it tough as we all feel more isolated than ever. That being said, I’m super nerdy about whales. I love them!
Something people don't know about you but should?
I don’t think people know that I’m someone who should be taken seriously. I’ve noticed it a lot in the industry that because I’m a young, blonde woman I’m either immediately put into a box, or they think I’m naive/unmotivated. I’m extremely driven, passionate and talented and if I work with you, I will happily go above and beyond every time. I want to show people that you can be soft, vulnerable, kind, and feminine - but still be a boss and make the hard calls. People will try to limit you with what they know to be possible, and only really you know what you are capable of.
Describe your work with a movie title:
’I Don’t Know How She Does It’
How old were you when you took your first photo?
It’s so hard to know, but super young. I mean, it was the early 2000’s and between my flip phone and a pink Sony Cybershot I’m not sure what came first but it was probably a selfie.
Favourite thing about photographing people?
I think my favourite thing is the unbelievable joy of watching someone view themselves differently and having a part in that. It seems like today social media is always trying to find a way to make us compete and compare, to have that hour dedicated to just lifting that person up and showcasing their beauty and charisma. As cheesy as it sounds I truly wouldn’t trade it for the world.
if you were a colour, what would you be?
Hm, I think I’d be turquoise. It’s certainly a colour that I’m attracted to in clothing, home decor and in my own images. It feels unique, feminine, independent and cool and I’d like to think that I’m those things as well.
