INTERVIEW: RONNIE LOYD

INTERVIEW: RONNIE LOYD

Meet Ronnie Loyd. An LA-based photographer who went from shooting local car shows in 2016 to artists like Madeon. Having always attended music events, he eventually decided to ask a photographer how they got into shooting shows, and found out that they were shooting for a publication. Soon after, Ronnie was freelancing for artists including Eprom and G-Jones, and booking his first Asia tour.

Having been off the road because of COVID for the last year, more recently Ronnie has put his favourite works together into a collection of intricate prints for sale.

Collection One:

Collection One is a handful of my favourite photos I've taken throughout the years. It originally started as me just looking for a place to print these photos to keep for myself & a friend suggested I should sell them publicly. I never gave much thought to selling prints until recently but I'm really stoked to finally see my photos in physical form!

Favourite thing to shoot?

I've been shooting everything on film for the past year on my Mamiya. I really love shooting people, especially when I'm able to capture someone's candid energy or emotion in a photo - editorial headshots are my personal favorite to shoot. I also really love shooting photos of everyday things when I go for walks in my neighborhood or around LA. I love when you can look at a photo of a busy city street or in a quiet suburb and it feels like you're there. I try to make photos that have a sense of life to them.

What inspires your work?

I'm really inspired by photographers like Todd Hido and Dino Kužnik in my personal work. In my music work, I draw inspiration from artists like Quinn Tucker (@quasarmedia), Miranda Mcdonald (@mirandamcdonald), and Joey Vitalari (@joeyvitalari). I've been working on the Ookay (Live) projects over the past year for various livestreams and it's been incredibly inspiring to work with that team—it's great to work with people who embrace my ideas. I'm also very inspired by directors like Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese; their films are always masterpieces. It's hard not to be inspired by them.

(Madeon)

What un-inspires you?

Pandemics.

'Photography can steal your soul' - true or false?

I'd say that's true. I think it's important to separate your work from your passions, even if it's through different types of photography. It's easy to get burnt out when you're doing something just to survive.

What you miss most about shooting?

I miss my job, my friends, traveling. I definitely have a new found sense of appreciation for shooting shows and touring. I'm so fucking stoked for events to return.

what's something the world doesn't know about Ronnie Loyd, but should?

I actually created the entire universe and I am god...

But I am very sensitive so pls be nice :(

(Los Angeles)

What’s next?

I'm working on a few limited run series next. I want these prints to be exclusively from my medium format portfolio - sort of my passion project I suppose. My goal with these are to print photos that someone would hang in their family room. I'd also like to make a few different zines this year, but I've yet to explore that haha. Collection One was just a small handful of photos I want to print one day—there's still plenty for future collections!
